The film “American Blackout” has just become available to watch online - awareness is the first step in fixing the broken U.S. voting process.

Whatever you think you know about our election systems or Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, this film will make you question further why the news media fails to accurately inform the public. Directed by [...]

geeking out

13 December 2006 / all, idaho, news / No Comments

this year, as the holiday season rolls around, one niggling question i have is: what would be a surprising gift for the nerds in my life?
in a recent cosmic log post, an idaho correspondent suggests Build Your Own Robots. personally, i am equally horrified and intrigued with something called a “nuclear spinthariscope“. eek!
These small [...]

BSU and…horny manatees?

12 December 2006 / BSU, idaho, news / No Comments

I saw that Boise State was mentioned in today’s NY Times, in an article about absurdist mascots:
The skit, as scripted for the Dec. 4 installment of “Late Night With Conan O’Brien,” was about absurdist college sports mascots that the host and his writers would like to see someday. Among them were “the Boise State Conjoined [...]

How did libertarian Prop 2 get so soundly trounced in such a conservative state? Organizing!

6 December 2006 / news, politics / No Comments

Jay Stevens at the American Prospect says in his analysis of the seemingly incongruous Idaho Prop 2 vote - well, basically that Idaho got it.  Voters understood that this was funded almost entirely by out-of-state interests, and was misleading and damaging to Idaho communities.  True dat!  But what I don’t understand is how these same [...]

Oh, please.

5 December 2006 / news, politics / No Comments

Tomorrow the US House of Representatives will vote on H.R. 6099, the, ahem, Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act of 2006.  According to the National Abortion Federation,
H.R. 6099 would require abortion providers to inform a patient seeking a legal abortion after 20 weeks that there is “substantial evidence” that a fetus may feel pain during [...]

Blogging for dollars

4 December 2006 / idaho, politics / No Comments

Julie Fanselow, author of the fine Idaho politics blog Red State Rebels, was one of thirteen political bloggers mentioned in the Sunday New York Times for getting paid to promote certain candidates.  The piece says that she ”… said on her blog she would entertain job offers from Howard Dean, Barack Obama, John Edwards or Al Gore.”  Fanselow [...]

Statesman: Plan B now available over the counter at Planned Parenthood

1 December 2006 / news, statesman / No Comments

Naturally this is good news, but our friends at the Statesman failed to mention that it’s available over the counter at many pharmacies and grocery stores.  Sheesh.  I happened to ask a locally-owned parmacy - Hill’s, on Broadway - if they carry it, and they said they don’t, for ‘moral’ reasons.  Hogwash.  I won’t be [...]

I know what you’re thinking: what the hell was she doing at Homecoming? Well, I have two words: FREE BEER. Don’t worry, I didn’t watch the game, though I did watch the cops arrest a drunk homeless dude while ignoring the hundreds of drunk people standing by their cars.

Devotchka to play ‘Lux Thursday 12/7

1 December 2006 / events, music / No Comments

The best gypsy-troubador band with a sousaphone ever, Devotchka, will play the Neurolux next week!  Okay, so last time they performed we voted them the Band Most in Need of a Nap, but for what they lack in charisma they more than make up for in dreamy, original music.  Highly recommended.
